EFCC: Malami Still in Custody Over Unmet Bail Terms

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Saturday said the continued detention of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, was due to his inability to meet bail requirements and not because of any political activity.

The anti-graft agency reacted to claims credited to Malami that his bail was withdrawn because he attended a political event in Kebbi State. The EFCC said the claim was incorrect and had no link to politics, media appearances, or public gatherings.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the commission explained that Malami was granted provisional administrative bail after a short interrogation on November 28, 2025. The bail, according to the EFCC, came with five clear conditions which the former minister has not fulfilled.

The commission noted that administrative bail is not a right but a temporary decision taken during investigations, pending possible court action. It added that failure to meet bail conditions automatically affects the status of such relief.

The EFCC also said it was forced to address the matter because of growing public narratives suggesting political interference. It maintained that Malami’s detention followed standard procedure and was based strictly on compliance issues.

The agency insisted that its actions were guided by law and ongoing investigations, stating that no special treatment was given or denied based on political considerations.

The EFCC assured the public that investigations would continue in line with due process and that all suspects are treated equally under the law.
