Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, a retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, has died at the age of 71. His death was confirmed by the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, through a statement released by his media aide on Tuesday. According to the statement, the former head of the judiciary passed away while receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia after battling a long illness.

The governor described the death as a major loss to Bauchi State, the Nigerian judiciary, and the country as a whole. He noted that Justice Muhammad was a respected son of Bauchi who devoted his life to the service of justice and the legal system. His career in the judiciary spanned several decades, during which he served at different levels of the courts.

Justice Muhammad began his judicial career as a High Court judge before rising to the Court of Appeal and later the Supreme Court. He eventually became the Chief Justice of Nigeria, a position he held from 2019 until his retirement in 2022. Throughout his years in service, he was known for discipline, dedication, and commitment to the rule of law.

The Bauchi State governor also recalled that the late jurist received the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger in recognition of his service to the nation. He said this award reflected the impact Justice Muhammad had on Nigeria’s legal system.
Governor Mohammed extended condolences to the family of the late former Chief Justice, members of the legal profession, and the people of Bauchi State and Nigeria. He offered prayers for the peaceful rest of the deceased and for strength and comfort for those mourning him, noting that his contributions to the judiciary will be remembered for years to come.
