The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress has declared its support for the Interim State Working Committee of the Labour Party in Rivers State, led by Gogo Wellington, bringing clarity to the party’s leadership crisis in the state.
The endorsement was made in Port Harcourt on Friday when members of the Labour Party’s interim executive paid a courtesy visit to the NLC Secretariat. Speaking during the visit, the Rivers State Chairman of the NLC, Alex Agwanwor, said the congress recognizes only the interim committee led by Wellington as the lawful leadership of the Labour Party in the state. He stated that the existing legal framework supports the committee and ruled out the legitimacy of any rival group claiming control of the party in Rivers State. He assured the interim executives of the NLC’s backing and urged them to remain focused on their mandate despite opposition.
In response, Wellington said the visit was aimed at rebuilding strong ties between the Labour Party and the NLC, which he described as a core pillar of the party. He noted that the Labour Party emerged from the labour movement and should maintain a close and functional relationship with organised labour to succeed.
Wellington explained that the party was beginning a restructuring process that would rebuild its structures from the state level down to local government areas and wards. He said the NLC, the Trade Union Congress and other labour-related bodies would be fully involved to ensure broad participation and strong grassroots support.
He assured the NLC of a cooperative working relationship with the new executive committee, adding that the integration of labour bodies into party activities would help strengthen organisation, coordination and outreach across all parts of the state.
