Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has asked the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Anthony Aziegbemi, to pay ₦25 billion as compensation for alleged defamation and libel. The governor also wants a written apology to be published in three national daily newspapers.
The demand was contained in a letter sent to Aziegbemi and signed by Okpebholo’s lawyer, R.I.D. Okezie. The letter accused the PDP chairman of making statements that portrayed the governor in a bad light and injured his reputation as both a public office holder and a former senator.
According to the letter, the statements were contained in a press release issued earlier in the year and circulated widely in newspapers and online platforms. The governor said the publication harmed his standing and the dignity of his office.
Okpebholo gave Aziegbemi seven days to meet the demands by paying the stated amount and publishing a retraction and apology. The letter warned that legal action would follow if the demands were not met within the given time.
