Seven people were taken to hospital after suffering burn injuries during a fire outbreak at the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve and spread rapidly to other parts of the building and nearby structures.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed that the fire affected several buildings close to the high-rise. These include the seven-storey Radio Nigeria building, Oluwole Plaza, a mosque, and other adjoining properties in the area. Traders and residents were asked to leave the area as the fire intensified.
According to the agency, seven adult males sustained varying degrees of burns and were given first aid by emergency responders before being moved to nearby hospitals for further treatment. Five other people were affected by smoke inhalation and received medical care at the scene.
Emergency teams from different agencies worked together through the night to bring the fire under control. Firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading further and protected most surrounding buildings from severe damage.
Authorities said that dampening operations are still ongoing to ensure the fire does not start again. Investigations are expected to determine the exact cause of the fire, while residents and business owners have been urged to remain cautious as emergency work continues in the area.
