Lawal Daura has made known his intention to run for governor of Katsina State in the 2027 election, pointing to concerns over insecurity and governance under the present administration. He said his decision followed careful observation of the situation in the state and growing worry over how leadership responsibilities are being handled.
Speaking during an interview on a Hausa-language programme on Tuesday, Daura explained that he has concluded consultations regarding the political party he will contest under and will announce it at the appropriate time. He noted that the present leadership should reconsider seeking another term, arguing that leaders ought to step aside when they are no longer able to manage the weight of office effectively.
Daura compared governance to carrying a heavy load, explaining that when a burden becomes too much, it should be removed to prevent damage. He suggested that the current administration has reached that point and should allow others to take over.
Reflecting on his political journey, the former intelligence chief said entering the race was not something he had originally planned. He explained that he had mostly played supportive roles behind the scenes in the past, making his decision to contest a new and unexpected step in his public life.
His declaration adds to the growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, as more figures begin to position themselves for key roles across the country.
