During the resumed court session at the Kwara State High Court, a prosecution witness stated that the EFCC obtained bank statements connected to loans meant for paying salaries of teachers under the State Universal Basic Education Board. These statements, which also included details of federal matching grants, were submitted as evidence.
A dispute arose in court when the defense argued that the documents provided were not properly arranged or numbered, making it difficult to review and respond. The prosecution insisted the documents had been served and that it was not their responsibility to organize them for the defense. The disagreement led the court to postpone the proceedings to allow the parties to arrange the documents correctly.
Earlier, testimony revealed that part of the federal grants, totaling ₦1 billion, had been borrowed in 2015 to cover salaries for civil servants and pensioners. The EFCC alleges that Ahmed and Banu approved the use of these federal funds for purposes other than intended, including paying civil servants’ salaries, which is contrary to the rules governing the grants.
The trial is set to continue on February 16, giving both the prosecution and defense time to properly organize the evidence for the next hearing.
