The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State on Thursday rejected the decision by the State House of Assembly to begin impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh. The party reacted shortly after the lawmakers announced the start of the process over claims of misconduct.
The House of Assembly began the procedure earlier in the day, with plans to formally serve the impeachment notice on the governor and his deputy within seven days. The development quickly drew responses from political actors in the state.
In a statement issued by its state publicity secretary, Darlington Nwauju, the APC said it would not support any attempt to remove the governor and his deputy through impeachment. The party described the move as unhealthy for the state and warned against actions that could create instability.
The APC stated that it could not remain silent while internal political disagreements were allowed to affect the running of government. According to the party, the impeachment process appeared to stem from earlier political conflicts and should not be allowed to interfere with governance in Rivers State.
The party also said it was determined to protect the current administration and would take steps to ensure that the government in the state continues without disruption. It maintained that Rivers State should not be thrown into crisis over political disagreements.
