The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has suspended its planned strike that was scheduled to begin on January 12, 2026. The decision was made known on Sunday through a statement released by the association’s secretary-general, Shuaibu Ibrahim.
The resident doctors had earlier resolved to go on strike after an emergency meeting of their national executive council held on January 2. At that meeting, the association announced its intention to withdraw services as a way to push the Federal Government to address unresolved issues affecting its members.
According to the association, the planned strike was meant to draw attention to its demands and concerns, which it believes have not been adequately handled by the authorities. However, following further deliberations, the leadership decided to suspend the industrial action.
The suspension means resident doctors will continue their duties for now while engagements with the government are expected to continue. The association did not state how long the suspension would last but confirmed that the earlier strike plan has been put on hold.
