Former presidential aspirant and veteran journalist, Dele Momodu, is expected to formally join the African Democratic Congress on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in Benin City, Edo State. The move marks his latest political shift amid ongoing efforts by opposition figures to form a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general election.
Momodu, who is a close associate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has been actively involved in discussions aimed at bringing together politicians from different parties. The talks are driven by concerns that divided opposition parties may struggle to challenge the current administration effectively.
The defection ceremony will take place at the newly established ADC State Secretariat in Benin City. Several party leaders and political stakeholders are expected to attend the event, including notable figures from Edo State who have already aligned with the party.
Ahead of the event, Momodu expressed enthusiasm about returning to his home state for the occasion. He described the move as a return to familiar political ground and said he would also visit his community after the event to meet supporters who have embraced the ADC.
He explained that his decision to join the ADC is tied to the broader goal of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system. According to him, the current political climate calls for cooperation beyond party boundaries, urging citizens from all political backgrounds to work together to protect democratic values.
Momodu also made it clear that his defection is not motivated by a personal quest for elective office. Instead, he said his focus is on national interest and ensuring that democracy continues to thrive for the benefit of Nigerians.
The ADC has recently attracted attention as part of the growing opposition movement seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s possible re-election bid in 2027. Momodu’s entry into the party adds to the momentum of the coalition effort, which is still developing but gaining traction across the country.
