Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said he may consider joining the All Progressives Congress only if clear guarantees are given on the future of the Kano State government and the welfare of his political supporters. He made this known during a meeting with party leaders and supporters from Rano and Dawakin Tofa local government areas, as well as members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, who gathered at his residence in Kano.
Kwankwaso explained that his position was shaped by past political experiences where alliances helped form governments but later left his group sidelined. He said such situations forced him and his supporters to leave those parties, adding that he would not repeat the same mistake without firm commitments.
He noted that, so far, no one had given him clear assurance that his political structure would be protected or that his supporters, including lawmakers and party officials, would be secure if they moved to the APC. According to him, knowing where he and his supporters stand remains necessary before any decision can be taken.
The meeting was attended by top Kano State government officials and NNPP leaders, including the deputy governor, state commissioners, and party executives. Many of them publicly reaffirmed their loyalty to Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Political observers say the strong show of support reflects Kwankwaso’s influence within Kano politics and comes amid growing talks about possible defections ahead of the 2027 general elections. They believe his cautious approach shows a focus on safeguarding political relevance and protecting loyal supporters rather than making a hurried move.
