The State Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State has rejected the decision of the party’s National Working Committee to dissolve its leadership structure in the state. The state party leadership said the existing structure remains valid and functional.
In a statement released in Osogbo on Friday and signed by the state chairman, Sunday Bisi, the committee said the party’s leadership in Osun was formed through due process and still enjoys the backing of members. It urged party members to stay calm and focused, insisting that external actions cannot override a structure built on internal party rules.
The committee also advised members to ignore directives or statements coming from sources it described as lacking legal authority. It reaffirmed its support for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration and said the party remains prepared for future elections that matter to residents of the state.
However, a different group within the party, known as the Professionals in Osun PDP, praised the National Working Committee for setting up a caretaker committee in the state. The group said the decision was necessary due to what it described as failures by the former state working committee.
In a separate statement signed by its chairman, Sam Segun-Progress, the group said the caretaker committee would help reposition the party and reduce internal tension. It added that the new leadership should reach out to aggrieved members and work toward settling disputes within the party.
The group also urged the caretaker committee to reconnect with members who felt sidelined under the previous leadership and restore unity within the party.
The Peoples Democratic Party had earlier announced the approval of caretaker committees for several states, including Osun, Delta, Rivers, Enugu and Imo. The party’s National Organising Secretary explained that the decision was taken in line with provisions of the party’s constitution and on behalf of the National Executive Committee.
In Osun State, the caretaker committee is expected to manage party affairs for a limited period, not exceeding 90 days, or until a new executive committee is elected. The development has deepened internal divisions within the party as leaders and members continue to express differing views on the way forward.
