NNPC Confirms Successful Oil Discovery in Niger Delta

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has announced that Chevron Nigeria Limited has successfully completed the Awodi-07 appraisal and exploration well in the shallow offshore western Niger Delta. The well is part of a joint venture between NNPC Ltd and Chevron, aimed at exploring and developing hydrocarbon resources in the region.
Drilling operations for Awodi-07 began in late November 2025 and concluded in mid-December 2025. According to NNPC, the process was carried out safely, following all regulatory standards, and included thorough testing, data collection, and well logging before securing the site.
The results confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons across multiple reservoir zones, marking a major step in unlocking the potential of the area. NNPC described the outcome as a milestone for the joint venture, reflecting the value of careful exploration, technical planning, and collaboration between the partners.
The joint venture arrangement gives Chevron a 40% stake while NNPC holds the remaining share. Together, the partners aim to increase production to about 146,000 barrels of oil per day, contributing to government revenue, energy supply, and job creation.
NNPC leadership said the discovery demonstrates the benefits of sector reforms and joint operations. The company plans to continue working with Chevron to develop the asset responsibly and ensure it contributes to national energy security.
The successful completion of Awodi-07 is expected to strengthen confidence in the joint venture’s assets and support future exploration and production activities across the Niger Delta.
