The Nigeria Union of Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory has instructed all primary and secondary school teachers in Abuja to take part in the ongoing strike action declared by the Joint Union Action Committee. The strike commenced on Monday, January 26, 2026, and affects public schools across the territory.
The directive was contained in a communiqué issued in Abuja on Monday and signed by the union’s chairman, Abdullahi Shafas, secretary, Margaret Jethro, and publicity secretary, Ibukun Adekeye. The union explained that the decision followed a directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress calling on all affiliated unions in the FCT to fully participate in the industrial action.
Although the teachers’ union initially had concerns about how the strike was organised by the Joint Union Action Committee, it stated that the involvement of the NLC made collective action necessary. As a result, teachers were asked to stay away from classrooms from Monday.
Teachers within Abuja city and nearby areas were also directed to gather at the National Industrial Court on Gimbiya Street in Area 11 by 7 a.m. on Monday. The gathering is meant to show support during the court hearing of a case involving the Joint Union Action Committee.
The union said it remains committed to engaging relevant authorities until all outstanding issues affecting teachers are resolved. It urged its members to remain united and assured them that updates would be communicated as events develop.
The strike action is part of a wider industrial dispute in the FCT, which began on January 19, following unresolved welfare concerns. These include issues related to unpaid entitlements, pension and housing fund deductions, salary administration, and allowances for some government workers.
