The Kano State Government has said it will not step into any ongoing court cases involving former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, stressing that all legal matters will be left entirely in the hands of the judiciary. The assurance was given on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during an interview in Kano.
The statement came shortly after Governor Abba Yusuf officially joined the All Progressives Congress following consultations with political stakeholders in the state. Yusuf made the move public at a reception held at the Government House, where party leaders and supporters gathered to welcome him.
According to the commissioner, the current administration has maintained a clear position of allowing the law to take its course, regardless of the individuals involved. He explained that the governor has not interfered in any legal matter since assuming office, including cases involving people close to the government, and does not intend to start now.
During the reception, Ganduje, who received Yusuf into the party, expressed confidence in the governor’s leadership and disclosed that the APC had agreed to support him for a second term in the 2027 governorship election. He also stated that serving governors automatically serve as party leaders in their states, placing Yusuf in charge of APC affairs in Kano.
Reacting to the government’s position, Mohammed Garba, Chief of Staff to the former governor, described the assurance as expected and reassuring. He said the judiciary should always be allowed to function freely and added that ongoing cases should be handled fairly under the supervision of the courts without any form of pressure.
Several cases linked to Ganduje are currently before different courts. The matters relate to issues from his time as governor between 2015 and 2023, including claims connected to contract awards, financial dealings, and other politically sensitive actions. The Kano State Government insists that all such cases will proceed without interference from the executive.
