Defence Minister Says He Was Targeted in Alleged Coup Plot

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has revealed that he was listed as a target in a planned attempt to overthrow President Bola Tinubu. The plot, according to Musa, included orders to arrest him, and he could have been shot if he resisted.
Musa spoke on Sunday during an interview on Channels Television, days after the military confirmed that 16 officers arrested in October 2025 would face trial over their alleged involvement in the coup attempt. He became aware that the conspirators had marked him for arrest.
The arrested officers were initially charged with acts of indiscipline and breaches of military regulations. Later investigations linked some of them to an effort to topple the government, a move considered against the professional standards of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Military authorities said that officers found guilty would be tried before a military judicial panel under the Armed Forces Act. The process is designed to ensure accountability while following due process and fairness.
The case has drawn attention to security within the military, as authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the alleged plot and the involvement of those accused.
This development comes amid heightened concerns over loyalty and order in the Nigerian military and the need to safeguard national leadership.
