PDP NEC Backs Caretaker Leadership, Sets Path for Congresses

The Peoples Democratic Party on Monday restated its resolve to overcome internal challenges as members of the National Executive Committee met to review the state of the party and chart a new course for the future.
At the 105th NEC meeting, the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee welcomed party leaders, elders, and stakeholders to the gathering, describing it as a moment of renewal at the start of the 2026 political year. He thanked members for their patience and loyalty during a difficult period marked by internal disputes and legal battles.
The caretaker chairman said the party went through serious trials in 2025 due to actions that departed from laid-down procedures. These actions, he noted, exposed the PDP to court cases and internal strain. Despite this, the party remained intact because members chose to follow the law and respect internal rules rather than personal interests.
He said the recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Ibadan, which nullified the Ibadan convention, brought clarity to the leadership situation of the party. According to him, the ruling confirmed the legitimacy of the current caretaker leadership and provided a clear path for the party to move ahead without uncertainty.
With the legal issues now settled, he stated that the party is ready to conduct outstanding state and regional congresses and begin preparations for a national convention that will follow party guidelines and the constitution.
The caretaker chairman described the court victory as one that belongs to all members of the PDP, stressing that it was not about individuals or factions but about protecting internal democracy and order within the party. He called on members at all levels to drop hostile language, heal old wounds, and work together to rebuild trust.
He also acknowledged the role played by key party leaders and committees who advised caution and respect for due process during the crisis. According to him, their guidance helped the party stay within the bounds of the law at a critical time.
The NEC leadership expressed confidence that with unity, discipline, and commitment to party rules, the PDP can reposition itself for national relevance and future electoral contests. The meeting ended with a call for calm, cooperation, and focused deliberations aimed at restoring the strength of the opposition party.
