The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday rejected a proposed amendment to the Electoral Amendment Bill that sought to make the electronic transmission of election results compulsory. The decision came during deliberations on Clause 60, Subsection 3, of the bill currently before lawmakers.
The rejected proposal would have required presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission to upload polling unit results directly to the INEC Result Viewing Portal immediately after results were recorded. Under the plan, results would be uploaded once the official result form was completed, signed, and validated by party agents at the polling unit.
Instead of adopting the amendment, the Senate decided to retain the existing provision in the Electoral Act. The current law allows presiding officers to transmit election results in any way approved by INEC, including details such as the number of accredited voters and final ballot figures.
By this decision, the Senate maintained INEC’s authority to determine the method and process for transmitting election results, rather than binding the commission to compulsory real-time electronic uploads. Further legislative action on the bill is expected as deliberations continue.
