Suspected political thugs on Wednesday night attacked the Edo State secretariat of the African Democratic Congress in Benin City, causing damage to parts of the building and attempting to set it on fire. The attackers reportedly poured fuel around the premises but failed to ignite the building after residents in the area intervened.
Videos shared on social media showed signs of destruction at the secretariat, including broken windows and damaged items. The attackers later fled the scene when their attempt to burn the building did not succeed.
The Edo State chairman of the ADC, Kennedy Odion, confirmed the incident and said the attackers came with fuel and appeared determined to destroy the party office. He stated that the act was meant to intimidate the party and push it out of the state ahead of the 2027 elections. He added that Nigeria’s democratic system allows freedom of association and participation by all political parties.
Odion said the matter had been reported to security agencies and called for those responsible to be identified and punished.
The Edo State Police Command also confirmed receiving a report of the attack at about 8:00 pm on Wednesday. Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said officers were immediately sent to the area to restore calm. She added that initial findings showed damage to party flags and two shattered windows.
According to the police, security has been increased around the area to prevent further attacks, while investigations are ongoing to track down the suspects.
