A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has announced plans to take control of the party’s national headquarters next Monday. The announcement comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) formally recognised the Wike-led faction on Thursday.
INEC allowed representatives from the Wike faction to participate in its first quarterly stakeholders’ meeting with political parties for 2026. The meeting, held at the commission’s headquarters, provided the faction with official recognition as part of the national political process.
The PDP has been embroiled in a long-standing leadership dispute that has divided the party into two main groups. The Wike-backed faction recently scheduled a national convention for March 28–29, 2026, a move rejected by opposing governors and members of the rival faction.
With INEC’s recognition, the Wike-aligned group now claims authority to manage the party’s headquarters and coordinate national activities. The faction plans to formally assume control of the secretariat and continue with preparations for the upcoming convention.
The leadership dispute within the PDP has drawn national attention, with both factions asserting legitimacy and seeking support from party members, governors, and stakeholders. The Wike faction’s upcoming move is seen as an effort to consolidate power and stabilise the party’s operations ahead of the 2026 political calendar.
Party observers note that the resolution of this internal conflict may influence PDP’s position and strategy in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, as both factions vie for recognition and control over party structures.
