The African Democratic Congress appointed a new regional leader. The African Democratic Congress has sworn in former Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Alhaji Rahman Owokoniran, as its South West Zonal Chairman. The ceremony took place under the approval of the party’s national leadership and marked the formal start of his tenure in the zone.
The swearing-in was carried out with the backing of the ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, and included the inauguration of members of the South West zonal executive committee. The Deputy National Chairman, Dr Bamidele Ajadi, presided over the process as the highest-ranking national officer from the region.
Following the event, a party leader, Mr Coker Onita, issued a statement addressing reports of division within the South West chapter of the party. He described such claims as false and said they were meant to confuse party members and the general public. According to him, the appointment of Owokoniran was properly done and fully approved by the national leadership of the ADC.
The party also rejected reports suggesting that the South West leadership had been disowned at the national level, insisting that the zonal structure remains intact and recognised. It alleged that false information was being spread to weaken the party’s growing presence in the region.
Onita further dismissed claims credited to a group said to be operating as an ADC Lagos State stakeholders forum, stating that the group lacked clear identity and authority within the party. He said the ADC supports open discussion and lawful engagement but would not allow actions aimed at disrupting its leadership.
The party reaffirmed its unity and readiness to offer Nigerians an alternative political platform, adding that the South West leadership under Alhaji Rahman Owokoniran remains valid and supported by the ADC at the national level.
