The Abia State Government announced a new plan to create 125,000 jobs through a large-scale commercial project aimed at boosting the state’s economy.
The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, said the initiative would be driven through partnership with private investors and would focus on long-term job creation rather than short-term assistance to citizens. He spoke at the Government House during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of the Aba Commercial Smart City.
The governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba, explained that the project is designed to transform Aba and other parts of the state into an industrial and business hub that can support steady economic growth and employment.
He stated that the administration’s approach is to provide meaningful work opportunities for youths and residents instead of giving financial handouts. According to him, collaboration between government and private investors remains key to achieving development goals in Abia State.
The governor also pointed to the recent improvement in power supply in Aba, where electricity has been stable for 90 days, as an example of what cooperation between the public and private sectors can achieve.
Providing details of the project, the Manager of Technical Services for the Aba Commercial Smart City, David Okoro, said the development will cover about 140 hectares of land located in Osisioma Local Government Area. He added that the project is expected to generate about 25,000 direct jobs and an additional 100,000 indirect jobs when fully operational.
The government said the smart city project is part of its broader plan to attract investment, grow industries and reduce unemployment across the state.
