Residents of satellite towns in Abuja are set to benefit from expanded road construction as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, disclosed details of an ongoing plan to improve transport links across key communities.
The minister spoke to journalists after inspecting road projects in Karu, Karshi and the Bwari–Kubwa axis. He explained that the road drive followed a directive from the President to extend durable road networks beyond the city centre to communities that have long lacked proper infrastructure.
According to the minister, the focus on satellite towns is meant to address years of uneven development while opening up business and job opportunities in areas experiencing rapid population growth.
One of the major projects under the plan is the Apo–Karshi Road, which had remained unfinished for several years. The FCT Administration ended the earlier contract and handed the project to a new construction firm to ensure faster progress. Work has since resumed on the road, which serves as a major link for residents and commuters.
In Karu, the minister expressed satisfaction with ongoing road reconstruction being handled by a local construction company, noting that the quality of work met expectations.
Another key project is the Bwari–Kubwa Road, measuring about 16 to 17 kilometres. The road is expected to ease traffic congestion and support trade and movement between the two areas. The minister stated that the road, along with other ongoing projects in the satellite towns, is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
He also instructed relevant agencies to carry out landscaping and environmental improvements in Karshi and nearby communities, stressing that infrastructure development should go beyond road construction alone.
The minister said better roads would improve movement, attract investors, increase property value and improve daily life for residents who have lacked basic infrastructure for many years. He added that the projects align with the federal government’s development agenda.
With several roads under construction at the same time, the FCT Administration said the renewed attention on satellite towns reflects a broader effort to spread development across the territory rather than concentrating growth only within Abuja’s city centre.
