Wike Praises Tinubu for Signing Electoral Act Amendment

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s swift signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law.

The signing followed the passage of the bill by the National Assembly and was completed within a day, reflecting the government’s move to strengthen electoral processes ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike, speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said the prompt action ends protests by those preparing to challenge the election outcomes.

The minister noted that reviewing and updating the Electoral Act is part of ongoing efforts to improve Nigeria’s democratic process and make elections more credible.

He commended the President and lawmakers for their timely actions, saying it shows a commitment to ensuring that the democratic framework continues to evolve and function effectively.

Wike also observed that quick approval of electoral reforms helps reduce unnecessary political tension and gives Nigerians confidence in the upcoming elections.

The Electoral Act Amendment 2026 introduces changes intended to enhance transparency in elections, including provisions for electronic transmission of results from polling units to central servers, and sets the stage for the 2027 general elections scheduled to begin in February.

The FCT Minister called on citizens and political stakeholders to remain law-abiding and trust the electoral process as the government works to implement these reforms smoothly.
