ADC to Mobilise Nigerians Over Electoral Act Changes

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, on Thursday, February 19, 2026, in Nigeria, said it will mobilise citizens to respond to the recent amendment of the Electoral Act signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The party made its position known through a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, as it reacted to the President’s approval of the bill.

The opposition party criticised the speed with which the amendment was signed into law. It said the decision came despite objections raised by many Nigerians.

According to the ADC, the quick approval of the bill raises questions about the motive behind the changes to the country’s electoral framework.

The party stated that at a time when many citizens are calling for better accountability and full use of technology in elections, the new amendment does not improve trust in the voting process.

It argued that rather than strengthen democracy, the law creates uncertainty, especially in the area of collation and transmission of election results. The ADC believes this may affect transparency in future elections.

The party also questioned why the ruling All Progressives Congress, which controls over 30 states and has majority members in the National Assembly, moved swiftly to alter the electoral law.

It suggested that the urgency may show concern about facing a truly open and competitive election.

Furthermore, the ADC warned that if there are no firm guarantees for electronic transparency, tensions could increase during voting and the announcement of results in upcoming elections.

Despite its criticism, the party said it would act within the law. It stated that it is prepared to defend Nigeria’s democracy through constitutional means.

The ADC added that it would mobilise Nigerians to remain alert, participate lawfully, and stand together to protect their rights, maintaining that the choice of the people must remain the final authority in any election.
