The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a Nigerian TikTok content creator known as Mirabel over allegations that she made a false rape report.
She was taken into custody as police continue their investigation into the sexual assault claim that recently stirred public reaction across the country.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed on Friday that the social media personality is currently being held by the police. He said investigations are ongoing and that the outcome of the inquiry will determine the next line of action.
The case began after Mirabel, identified on TikTok as @mirab351, shared emotional videos online alleging that a man forced his way into her apartment on February 15, restrained her, and threatened that his family’s influence would shield him from justice. The videos spread quickly on social media, leading to widespread outrage and calls for action.
Following the online posts, the Commissioner of Police directed officers at the Ibafo Division to reach out to her. She later appeared at a police station where she gave an initial statement and underwent a medical examination.
The matter was then transferred to the Ogijo Police Station, where the alleged incident was said to have taken place.
Police had earlier stated that she was treated as a complainant and not as a suspect when she first reported the incident. Authorities also said she received medical attention due to her emotional and physical state while investigations commenced.
However, after further review of the case, the police confirmed that she has now been arrested over claims that the report may have been false.
The command maintained that it remains neutral and committed to establishing the facts.
The police added that if the allegation of rape is found to be true, the suspect involved would face prosecution.
On the other hand, if the claim is proven to be false, the law provides penalties for giving false information to law enforcement agencies.
The development has added a new turn to the case, which continues to draw attention as the investigation proceeds.
