Tinubu Celebrates Obasanjo’s Legacy at 89

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo as he turns 89 on March 5, praising his long record of service to Nigeria and his continued role in national and continental affairs.

The message was contained in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

In his tribute, Tinubu described Obasanjo as a respected elder statesman whose contributions over the years have shaped Nigeria and Africa.

He noted that the former leader first ruled the country as military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, when he handed over power to a civilian government. He later returned as Nigeria’s civilian president from 1999 to 2007 at the start of the Fourth Republic.

The President recalled Obasanjo’s role during the Nigerian Civil War, where he commanded troops, as well as his time in prison during the military era after speaking against injustice.

He also referred to the former president’s involvement in African diplomacy and economic matters, saying his efforts have gone beyond Nigeria.

Tinubu acknowledged that even after leaving office, Obasanjo has remained active in public life through books, lectures and regular comments on national issues.

According to him, the former president’s continued engagement reflects his commitment to national development and public service.

As Obasanjo marks his 89th birthday, Tinubu prayed for good health, strength and wisdom for him in the years ahead, expressing hope that he would continue contributing to the country and humanity at large.
