Kwankwasiyya Movement Raises Alarm Over Conflicting Court Rulings

The Kwankwasiyya Movement on Thursday, March 19, 2026, in Nigeria, raised concerns about conflicting court decisions and called for changes in the judicial system, saying the situation could affect the country’s democracy.

The group spoke through a statement signed by its spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, where it pointed to recent rulings as part of a growing pattern.

The movement explained that different court decisions on similar matters have created confusion, especially in political cases. It referred to a judgment from a High Court in Abuja involving the New Nigeria People’s Party as one of the examples that has added to the issue.

According to the group, this situation is not limited to one party. It noted that cases involving the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and African Democratic Congress have also faced similar problems, where court decisions have led to disagreements and division within the parties.

The movement also raised concerns about courts of equal authority giving different rulings on the same matters, and in some cases, handling cases that are already before higher courts. It said this has affected trust in the legal process and raised questions about fairness and proper procedure.

The group warned that these developments could make people lose confidence in the judiciary and create tension in the political space, especially as the country moves closer to future elections. It added that if the situation continues, it could affect how people view democratic institutions and the credibility of elections.

The movement called on opposition parties to work together in protecting the rule of law and advised that the issue should not be seen as a party matter but as a national concern. It also encouraged peaceful and lawful actions, including public engagement, to address the situation.

In addition, the group urged the National Judicial Council to look into the matter and take steps to address the concerns about conflicting rulings. It also advised judges to follow due process and remain fair in their decisions, while warning political actors against using the courts to gain advantage in party disputes.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement ended by stating that the judiciary should remain a place where justice is clear and reliable, not a source of confusion in the country.
