Malami vows to defend self, insists on clean record as AGF

On March 19, 2026, in Nigeria, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, said he is ready to defend himself against allegations of financial misconduct and stated that he has no regrets about his time in office.

He made this known during a recent interview conducted in Hausa while addressing ongoing investigations involving him.

Malami explained that he had been held by different security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and also spent time at Kuje Prison and with the Department of State Services.

Despite these experiences, he maintained that he accepts the situation and is prepared to face the allegations through legal means.

He also raised concerns about how the investigation was carried out, stating that his rights were not followed during searches of his properties.

According to him, security operatives carried out searches on his homes and business locations without informing him or allowing him to be present, which he believes goes against constitutional provisions.

The former minister stated that all actions he took while serving in government were based on his understanding of the law and the responsibilities of his office. He maintained that he remains confident in his record and is willing to defend it.

Malami is currently facing a 16-count charge related to alleged money laundering alongside his wife, Bashir Asabe, and his son, Abdulaziz Malami.

The case was filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and legal proceedings are ongoing.
