Eid message: INEC boss urges discipline ahead of Ekiti, Osun polls

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, has called on both staff and Nigerians to apply the discipline gained during Ramadan to strengthen the country’s electoral process.

The appeal comes as preparations continue for the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, as well as the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan made the call during a message to mark Eid-el-Fitr, where he linked the values of the fasting period to the need for integrity, patience, and responsibility in election management. He noted that this period presents an opportunity for renewed commitment to credible elections in Nigeria.

He also pointed out that the overlap of Ramadan and the Christian Lenten season reflects a shared responsibility among citizens to support the country’s democratic system.

According to him, the same values taught during these periods should guide actions as the nation moves toward key electoral activities.

Speaking on the commission’s workforce, the INEC chairman said staff welfare remains important, noting efforts to improve morale and engagement across offices nationwide.

He added that the commission is working with thousands of staff across all local government areas to ensure readiness for upcoming polls.

Amupitan further stressed the need for professionalism, urging a strict approach against misconduct. He explained that improving public confidence in elections requires discipline and proper conduct from officials at all levels.

Since assuming office in October 2025, he has taken steps to improve the commission’s operations, including the use of updated electoral laws and technology. The commission is now working with tools such as BVAS and the result viewing portal to improve transparency.

The Ekiti and Osun governorship elections are expected to serve as a test for these efforts ahead of the 2027 general election, with the commission focusing on building a system that can withstand political pressure and deliver credible results.
