2027: ADC faces collapse if Obi misses presidential ticket – Fayose

In Abuja, Nigeria, on Sunday, former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, said the future of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 presidential election may depend on whether Peter Obi secures the party’s presidential ticket, warning that the party could struggle if he does not emerge as its candidate.

Fayose made this known while speaking during the ongoing Peoples Democratic Party national convention in Abuja, where political leaders gathered to discuss party matters and the wider political situation in the country. He assessed ongoing alignments among opposition figures as preparations gradually build toward the next general elections.

He explained that Obi remains a strong political figure due to his performance in the 2023 election, where he gained wide support across different parts of the country. However, he expressed doubt about Obi’s chances of becoming president in 2027, noting that current political realities may make it difficult.

Fayose also raised concerns about the internal situation within opposition parties, suggesting that it may affect Obi’s political options moving forward. He questioned whether Obi would be willing to accept a lower role such as running mate if he does not secure a party’s presidential ticket.

In addition, he spoke about other key political figures, including Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Atiku Abubakar, stating that developments involving them could shape the contest for party tickets ahead of 2027.

Fayose also ruled out the possibility of Obi returning to the Labour Party, pointing to internal divisions within the party. He added that Obi’s past political success was largely driven by his personal appeal rather than the strength of any political party structure.

Meanwhile, the PDP national convention continued in Abuja with over 2,000 delegates in attendance. The chairman of the convention planning committee, Okezie Ikpeazu, said delegates from across the country were present, while efforts to resolve internal disagreements within the party are still ongoing.
