Wike announces N500m support for Mpigi’s family

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced a N500 million support package for the family of late Senator Barinada Barry Mpigi during a tribute event held in Port Harcourt.

The fund, raised by the Rivers State Rainbow Coalition, is intended to provide lasting support for the family and preserve the memory of the late lawmaker.

Wike explained that beyond organising burial activities, there is a need for real assistance to the family left behind. He noted that the late senator played a strong role during difficult political periods and remained committed even when others stepped back. According to him, Mpigi’s loyalty and support helped maintain stability in Rivers State politics.

The minister also spoke about the late senator’s contributions to the Ogoni people, including his involvement in the process that led to the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni. He added that the planned fund would be used to create a foundation that will continue to support the family in the future.

Several political leaders from different parties attended the event and paid tribute to the late senator. Members of the Peoples Democratic Party, the All Progressives Congress, and other groups described him as a committed politician who maintained strong relationships across party lines.

Among those present were key political figures, traditional leaders, and community representatives who described Mpigi as dependable and dedicated to public service. They noted that his death has left a gap in the political space in Rivers State.

Family members also spoke about his role at home, describing him as a strong pillar who supported many people. They said the large turnout at the event showed how many lives he touched during his lifetime.

Other speakers, including former lawmakers and political leaders, spoke about his work in the Senate, recalling his involvement in development projects and policy discussions. They noted that he remained active in his duties until his death and was known for pushing initiatives that benefited his constituents.

The late senator, who died on February 19, 2026, was known for his grassroots connections and active role in politics. Many at the event called on his supporters and family to continue upholding the values he lived by, while prayers were offered for his soul.
