The Social Democratic Party has pulled away from talks involving opposition coalitions ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria. Adewole Adebayo, who once ran for president under the party, said the party is not supporting the idea of elite-driven political alliances as a path to defeating the ruling party.

He explained that many of the coalition discussions going on lack unity of purpose and are not strong enough to deliver real change. According to him, the party is more interested in reaching Nigerians who have stopped taking part in elections rather than sharing political positions among established politicians.

Adebayo pointed out that a large number of registered voters did not participate in the last election and said this group should be the main target for any serious political movement. He added that the focus should be on understanding why many citizens stay away from voting and how to bring them back into the process.

He also noted that while the SDP has spoken with some political groups, many of those discussions did not progress because of internal problems within those organisations. Instead of formal alliances at this stage, he said the party is working on building wider support through civic groups, professional associations, and ordinary citizens.
He further stated that any formal political partnership may only become realistic after party primaries, adding that the party is more concerned with building trust and responsible governance than just winning elections.
