2027 Presidency: ADC Proposes Power-Sharing Formula to Prevent Internal Crisis

The African Democratic Congress has introduced a new political arrangement aimed at reducing conflict within Nigeria’s opposition camp as preparations for the 2027 presidential election continue.

Lukman Salihu, a key promoter of the party’s reform plans, explained that the proposed system is designed to stop a situation where one person takes full control after elections. He said the party wants a structure where leadership responsibilities are shared among a team rather than centred on a single individual.

The idea comes at a time when major opposition politicians such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi are all being discussed as possible contenders for a joint opposition effort.

Salihu said the competition among them should not be seen as division but as part of normal political contest. He explained that the goal is to ensure that whoever eventually becomes the presidential candidate will still work within a team structure rather than operate alone.

The ADC also said it has already developed a policy plan and party manifesto that was approved at its last convention. The party stated that the document focuses on governance centred on citizens and addressing national problems.

It added that delays in making the policy public were caused by internal issues and legal matters, but preparations are ongoing to fully present it.

The party also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress, saying it has moved away from its original principles and now faces internal control challenges between party leaders and elected officials.

Salihu further said the party is working on a screening process to ensure that candidates who emerge are widely accepted by voters and fit into the planned structure.

He also stated that participation in the coalition process remains voluntary and that those not involved are free to stay out.

According to him, the ADC believes that despite current tensions, opposition forces will eventually come together behind a single candidate for the 2027 elections while still maintaining internal balance through the proposed shared leadership system.
