Extrajudicial Killing: Oborevwori Demands Justice for Ogidi

In Delta State on Thursday, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori condemned the killing of 28-year-old musician Oghenemine Ogidi, also known as Mene Ogidi, who died after being shot by a police officer in Effurun.

The governor reacted through a statement released by his spokesman, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable, while calling for justice over the matter.

The incident happened on Sunday, April 26, 2026, when officers attached to Area Command Effurun reportedly acted on intelligence concerning the deceased.

During the operation, a police officer identified as ASP Nuhu Usman discharged his weapon, which led to Ogidi’s death. Reports also indicated that the victim was allegedly intercepted while attempting to send a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

Oborevwori said the act violated the value placed on human life and insisted that no individual should be treated in such a manner. He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that the state government would not ignore the case. He added that the protection of residents remains a duty his administration takes seriously.

The governor also acknowledged steps already taken by the Nigeria Police Force, including disciplinary action against the officers involved. The decision to dismiss and prosecute those found responsible has been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval.

He further stated that the state government would follow the case closely until it is concluded and would support the victim’s family where necessary. According to him, the government remains committed to ensuring that justice is served and that the rule of law is upheld across the state.
