On Thursday during a television programme in Nigeria, a presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress, Mohammed Hayatudeen, dismissed ongoing discussions about zoning ahead of the 2027 elections, saying the issue is distracting Nigerians from more pressing national problems. He spoke on Channels Television, where he addressed political developments and the state of the country.

Hayatudeen said the focus on where a presidential candidate should come from is taking attention away from insecurity, rising poverty and lack of jobs. He pointed to recent cases of abductions and killings across the country, noting that many families are struggling with basic needs such as food and education. According to him, these problems should be the main concern of leaders and citizens rather than regional arguments.

He maintained that leadership should be based on ability, experience and concern for citizens, not location. In his view, Nigeria needs leaders who can address economic challenges and improve security across the country. He also linked the rise in violence to long-standing economic problems, saying poor management of the economy over many years has led to increased hardship and growing poverty levels among citizens.

The aspirant rejected claims that insecurity in the country is mainly tied to election periods. He explained that available data does not support such claims, adding that the issues have deeper roots connected to the economy and governance.
Speaking on his decision to run under the ADC, Hayatudeen said the party’s structure and direction align with his plans for the country. He noted that the party is focused on addressing cost of living challenges, unemployment and insecurity, which he believes reflect the concerns of many Nigerians.
He also raised concerns about the state of Nigeria’s political space, saying it has become difficult for citizens to freely make political choices. Despite this, he expressed readiness to continue his political pursuit and contribute to national development through the democratic process.
