Some members of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State, on May 6, 2026, in Ibadan, opposed moves to adopt a consensus candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that such a step could weaken the party in the state. Their position was made known after a meeting held at the University of Ibadan, where party stakeholders gathered to discuss ongoing political developments.
The group, made up of several party figures, said the plan to impose a candidate goes against the principles of fairness and internal democracy. They called for a proper primary election process where all interested aspirants can contest freely and members can decide who represents the party.
The development comes at a time when political activities within the Oyo APC are increasing, especially as aspirants continue consultations and seek support for the governorship race. Former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, recently met with party executives and declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election. He also made it clear that he does not support the idea of a consensus candidate.
At the same time, some party leaders have shown support for Senator Sharafadeen Alli as their preferred choice for the governorship position. This has created divisions within the party, as other members insist on an open process.
The stakeholders warned that ignoring due process could lead to serious internal problems and weaken the party’s chances in the next election. They also rejected a separate meeting reportedly held earlier in Ibadan, saying it did not represent the views of genuine party members and was driven by personal interests.
They urged the national leadership of the party to step in and ensure that rules are followed, adding that unity within the party must be protected. The group also called for disciplinary action against members accused of going against party guidelines.
According to them, the party still has strong support among residents of the state, but this can only be maintained if fairness and transparency guide its activities as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
