Wike Challenges PDP Rival Faction

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday in Abuja challenged a rival group within the Peoples Democratic Party to prove its claim of leadership by taking formal steps expected of a recognised party structure, as the internal crisis continues ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during a live media session with journalists, Wike said members of the opposing camp have been misleading the public about their position in the party. He stated that the group lacks legal backing and cannot carry out official party activities.He explained that any group claiming to control the party should be able to operate basic structures such as an official bank account for party transactions and a recognised secretariat.

According to him, such actions require proper documents and recognised leadership, which he said the faction does not have.Wike also pointed to the legal requirements involved in opening a party account, noting that financial institutions would demand valid records and confirmation of leadership before allowing such a process.

He argued that the absence of these requirements shows that the faction cannot act on behalf of the party.The minister warned against any attempt to set up what he described as unauthorised offices in the name of the party within Abuja.

He said his responsibility includes maintaining peace in the Federal Capital Territory and that any move capable of causing disorder would be addressed.He added that the courts had already given direction on the leadership issue and that any effort to create another structure outside that ruling goes against the law.

He accused some political figures of misinterpreting legal decisions to suit their interests and create confusion among party members.Wike maintained that he remains part of the PDP and is committed to protecting due process within the party.

He said the ongoing dispute stems from disagreements over leadership arrangements and preparations for future elections, which have continued to divide members.
