Wike Targets Jabi Lake Shanties, Dismisses Emotional Pleas

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday in Abuja directed action against undeveloped and poorly maintained areas around Jabi Lake, saying the current state of the environment does not suit the image of the nation’s capital.

The decision followed public reactions to a viral video where a pastor urged the government to preserve the lake for public use and avoid steps that could limit access.Speaking during a media session, Wike made it clear that the move is based on existing laws and the Abuja master plan, not public pressure.

He said land around the lake was originally given to developers for major projects but many of them failed to carry out the required work for years, leaving the spaces taken over by temporary structures.He explained that some of the affected lands had remained idle for over a decade, adding that such a situation would no longer be allowed.

According to him, the administration has started taking back plots from owners who did not meet development conditions and will reassign them to those ready to build as agreed.The minister also said land allocation in the FCT comes with clear timelines and rules, and failure to follow them leads to revocation.

He noted that some individuals held on to land without developing it, while others changed its purpose without approval.Wike addressed concerns raised by members of the public, stating that the action is not aimed at taking the lake away from residents but to restore order and proper use of the area.

He added that the government is working to improve the surroundings and make it more suitable for both recreation and investment.He also pointed out cases where land meant for leisure activities was converted into other uses without permission, adding that such actions go against planning regulations.

He said the administration would enforce compliance to ensure that all developments align with the original design of the city.The minister maintained that the goal is to improve the standard of the Jabi Lake area while keeping it accessible and properly managed for public use.
