Wike Speaks on Leadership, Infrastructure at UNIPORT Convocation

Before academics, students, government officials, alumni and guests at the 36th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt on Saturday, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike delivered a lecture on leadership and infrastructure development, using the platform to discuss Nigeria’s development challenges and the role of leadership in national growth.

Speaking at his alma mater, Wike described the University of Port Harcourt as an institution that played a major role in shaping his education, values and public service career. He said the invitation to deliver the convocation lecture was both an honour and a reminder of the responsibility attached to leadership and governance.

Addressing the graduating students, Wike said they were entering society at a critical period in the country’s history. He urged them to prepare for the demands of leadership and nation-building, noting that Nigeria needs citizens who are ready to contribute to public service and development.

The FCT minister argued that the quality of leadership remains one of the biggest factors determining the progress of any nation. According to him, leadership should be measured by practical results and the impact it leaves behind through roads, schools, hospitals, power projects and other public infrastructure that improve people’s lives.

Wike said Nigeria continues to face a development challenge despite its large population, natural resources and economic potential. He noted that the country gained independence with high expectations and vast opportunities, but decades later still struggles with poverty, insecurity, unemployment and inadequate infrastructure.

According to him, the country’s difficulties cannot be blamed solely on external factors or historical circumstances. He maintained that leadership failures over the years have contributed heavily to Nigeria’s inability to fully achieve its development goals.

He stated that leadership goes beyond occupying public office, describing it as the ability to inspire people, manage resources effectively and pursue a clear vision for society. He added that successful leaders must possess qualities such as courage, discipline, accountability, integrity, political will and commitment to service.

Wike explained that vision alone is not enough, stressing that leaders must have the determination to implement policies and complete projects that can improve the lives of citizens. He noted that many development plans fail because they remain on paper without effective execution.

The minister also described accountability as an important part of leadership, saying leaders should be judged by the results they produce and the legacy they leave behind. He argued that leadership should focus on service to the people rather than personal gain.

Speaking on infrastructure, Wike said no country can achieve meaningful development without sustained investment in critical sectors such as transportation, electricity, healthcare, education and water supply. He maintained that infrastructure serves as evidence of whether leadership is delivering on its promises.

According to him, countries that invest in infrastructure create opportunities for economic growth, job creation and improved living standards, while those that neglect such investments often face stagnation and social challenges.

Wike concluded that leadership and infrastructure development remain closely connected, adding that the future of Nigeria depends on leaders who are prepared to turn ideas into lasting projects that benefit citizens and strengthen national development.
