IG Replaces Placid as Police Spokesman After Three Months

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the appointment of CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu as the new Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force.

The announcement was made on Friday through a statement issued by the outgoing police spokesperson, DCP Anthony Okon Placid. The appointment comes barely three months after Placid assumed the position as the Force Public Relations Officer.

According to the statement, Iniedu brings years of experience in policing, public communication, intelligence operations, administration and accountability. The police leadership expressed confidence that his background would help improve communication between the force and the public.

A native of Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Iniedu graduated from the University of Uyo with a degree in Pure Chemistry. Over the years, he has participated in several professional training programmes covering investigative interviewing, crime scene management, intelligence analysis, strategic communication and human rights-based policing.

Before his latest appointment, he served as the Head of the Complaint Response Unit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. In that role, he coordinated the handling of public complaints and worked on initiatives aimed at improving transparency, accountability and public confidence in the police.

The new police spokesperson has also held several operational and administrative positions across the country. He previously served as Public Relations Officer of the Police College of Information Technology in Kobape, Ogun State, where he was involved in managing public communication for the institution.

His career within the force includes appointments as Operations Officer at Maisandari Division in Yobe State, Area Crime Officer at Umuahia Area Command in Abia State, and Staff Officer at the Inspector-General of Police Secretariat at the Force Headquarters.

Iniedu also served as Second-in-Command of the 50 Police Mobile Force Squadron in Kubwa and later headed the Force Headquarters Situation Room, where he supervised the coordination and dissemination of security and crime-related information across the country.

The police leadership stated that his wide range of experience in both field operations and public engagement makes him well suited for the position. The force believes his appointment will strengthen ongoing efforts to improve communication with citizens and support reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.

Iniedu succeeds DCP Anthony Okon Placid, who was appointed Force Public Relations Officer on March 8, 2026, following the exit of Benjamin Hundeyin from the role.
