Obi Warns accepting Unverified Certificates Threatens Nigeria’s Future

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has warned that accepting questionable or unverified academic certificates among politicians and public officials could harm Nigeria’s future.

Obi raised the concern on Tuesday in a post on his X account while discussing the need for accountability and proper standards in public life.

The former Anambra State governor said the issue should not be treated as a matter involving only particular individuals or political groups. He argued that Nigerians should pay attention to how people obtain positions of authority and whether they meet the required standards.

According to Obi, political loyalty should not be a reason for citizens to ignore missing, doubtful or unverified academic credentials. He said the same standards should apply to everyone, regardless of political affiliation or personal connections.

He warned that allowing people with questionable qualifications to occupy sensitive public and professional positions could gradually weaken institutions and reduce confidence in the country’s systems.

Obi also said leadership should be based on honesty, transparency and proper verification. He noted that a person’s performance in office should not be used to excuse problems surrounding the process through which the person obtained the position.

The former presidential candidate urged Nigerians to place national interest above political sentiments and resist the practice of defending individuals simply because they belong to a preferred political camp.

He further warned that ignoring basic checks on academic qualifications could create a culture where established rules are treated as unimportant.

Obi said Nigeria’s development depends on citizens and leaders who are willing to uphold accountability and due process, even when doing so may be politically difficult.

He called on Nigerians to defend principles rather than personalities, stressing that decisions made today could affect the standards and opportunities available to future generations.
