Osun Calls for reconciliation, Warns Against Fresh Post-Election Violence

The Osun State Government has called on political leaders, residents and other stakeholders to maintain peace and avoid actions that could lead to fresh violence following the recent governorship election in the state.

The government made the appeal on Sunday, August 23, 2026, through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, as concerns grew over reports of possible disturbances in some parts of Osun.

The state government also urged security agencies to take steps to restore law and order in areas where post-election tensions have been reported. It called on political actors and residents to support reconciliation and allow the state to move beyond the violence recorded during the election period.

The government expressed sympathy to people affected by violence before the election and said the period after the poll should be used to promote healing and peaceful relations among residents.

It also raised concerns over reports that some individuals or groups may be planning fresh unrest in local government areas and motor parks across the state. The government warned that any such action would worsen tensions and affect the development of Osun.

According to the state government, the election has ended and political actors should now focus on maintaining peace rather than creating another round of conflict. It also said efforts by President Bola Tinubu and Governor Ademola Adeleke to find a peaceful way forward should be respected.

The government further asked security agencies to operate within the law and address concerns over the detention of political supporters. It also called for an end to what it described as partisan treatment in the management of local government areas and motor parks.

Political leaders were urged to control their supporters and avoid statements or actions capable of causing trouble. The government said Osun needs stability to focus on development after a tense election season.

The call for peace comes shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke praised the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, for supporting peace after his meeting with President Tinubu in Abuja.

Adeleke described Oyebamiji’s position as a welcome change after weeks of intense political activities and urged leaders across party lines to work together for the progress of the state.

The state government said Osun must now concentrate on rebuilding trust, protecting lives and property, and creating an environment where residents can go about their daily activities without fear of renewed political violence.
