Imo Fixes September 26 for LG Elections

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission, ISIEC, has scheduled the state’s local government elections for Saturday, September 26, 2026, with voting expected to take place across all 27 local government areas.

The commission’s chairman, Chief Charles Ejiogu, announced the election date in a statement issued on September 11, 2026, urging registered political parties and the public to take note of the development.

The election will cover the 27 local government council chairmanship positions and 305 councillorship seats across the state.

ISIEC said voting would take place in 4,758 polling units spread across Imo State, where eligible voters will choose candidates for the various local government positions.

The commission called on all registered political parties to make the necessary preparations ahead of the election and comply with the requirements for participating in the exercise.

ISIEC explained that the September 26 date is covered by the 360-day notice of election issued on September 18, 2025.

The notice was issued in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended, which provides for the required notice period ahead of an election.

The electoral commission also disclosed that discussions with key stakeholders were still ongoing as part of preparations for the local government poll.

The consultations are expected to involve political parties and other relevant stakeholders to address issues connected with the conduct of the election.

With the announcement, political parties contesting the election now have a fixed date to complete their preparations for the exercise.

The September 26 poll will determine the chairmen who will lead the 27 local government councils, alongside councillors who will represent the different wards across the state.

The election is expected to take place simultaneously across the 4,758 polling units, as the state electoral commission continues its preparations for the exercise.
