Former PDP Chairman Bamanga Tukur Dies at 90

Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and businessman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has died at the age of 90.

Tukur reportedly died on Saturday at his residence in Abuja after battling a prolonged illness, according to information from his family.

His burial is expected to take place later on Saturday at the palace of the Lamido of Adamawa in Yola, Adamawa State, in line with Islamic burial traditions.

The former politician is survived by 17 children.

Tukur was one of the prominent political figures from the former Gongola State, where he served as governor during the Second Republic.

Gongola State was later divided into Adamawa and Taraba states, with Tukur remaining an important figure in the political development of the region.

He later moved into the federal government, where he served as Minister of Industries during the military administration of former Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

Tukur was also involved in national politics and at one point sought to contest for the presidency of Nigeria.

His political career later took him to the leadership of the PDP, where he became the party’s National Chairman.

As PDP chairman, he played a role in the affairs of the party during a period of major political activities and internal developments within the organisation.

Beyond politics, Tukur was also known as a businessman who was involved in various economic activities in Nigeria.

His death marks the end of the life of a politician and businessman who spent several decades participating in Nigeria’s public and political affairs.
