The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has reaffirmed its support for the Rainbow Coalition led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The position of the Rivers APC differs from that of the party’s Progressive Governors’ Forum, which has rejected the Wike-led political alliance and maintained that APC governors are focused on the party’s candidates.
The Rivers APC made its position known in a statement signed by its state Chairman, Tony Okocha, and Publicity Secretary, Chibike Ikenga, on Thursday.
The party said it was working with other political parties, groups and individuals involved in the coalition to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu and other candidates backed by the alliance in Rivers State during the 2027 elections.
The state chapter explained that political alliances should take into account the political realities and interests of each state rather than follow one approach across the country.
It maintained that Rivers State had the right to enter into political partnerships that it believed would protect the interests of its people. According to the party, political decisions should be based on the needs and expectations of citizens and residents of the state.

The Rivers APC also linked its cooperation with Wike and other political groups to its performance during the 2023 elections. The party expressed confidence that the existing arrangement could attract greater support for Tinubu in the 2027 election.
The APC state chapter further called on members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum to consider wider political partnerships in their respective states. It urged them to engage with other political groups and increase efforts to mobilise voters ahead of the 2027 polls.
The party argued that political circumstances vary from one state to another and that a strategy that works in one part of the country may not necessarily be suitable for another.
The Rivers APC also rejected attempts by political groups outside the state to influence its local decisions. It said political interests within Rivers should remain at the centre of decisions concerning the state.
The party maintained that it was satisfied with its coalition arrangement with Wike and other political groups and said it had no regrets over its involvement in the formation of the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State.
The development followed a recent position by the Progressive Governors’ Forum that APC governors were not part of the Rainbow Coalition or any similar alliance involving other political parties in their states.
The forum said the governors remained committed to strengthening the APC and securing victory for the party’s candidates in the 2027 general elections.
