Obi made the statement at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, where he spoke on the role of the media and political leadership in sustaining democracy.
The conference, organised around the theme “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” brought together editors and other media professionals to discuss issues affecting Nigeria’s democratic process.
The former Anambra State governor said political disagreements should be based on government policies, decisions and performance rather than personal attacks against public officials.

He said his approach to political criticism was not based on insulting individuals, including the President or state governors. According to him, holding a public office gives leaders a level of respect, even when their actions and policies are being questioned.
Obi, however, said respect for political office should not stop Nigerians or journalists from examining the actions and performance of those in government.
He urged editors and the wider media to carefully assess political leaders by looking at their records, public statements, qualifications and conduct.
The NDC candidate also said the behaviour of political leaders could affect the wider society, making it important for the media to properly examine those seeking or holding public office.
His comments come as political parties and their candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections, with debates over the performance of the current administration and the records of political leaders expected to remain central to public discussions.
