Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has called an emergency meeting with heads of security agencies in the state following a recent rise in violence and killings allegedly involving rival cult groups.
The meeting is expected to hold on Wednesday and will focus on the security situation in the state, particularly the recent attacks recorded in Osogbo and other areas.
The governor’s Special Adviser on Security Matters, Samuel Ojo, disclosed this while speaking on the development. He said the governor was concerned about the increasing violence and wanted security agencies to take stronger steps to prevent further loss of lives.
The meeting is also expected to review measures for improving security in different parts of Osun and stopping criminals from using forests as hiding places.
Ojo said the government would pay closer attention to forest areas across the state because of concerns that criminals could use them as bases for their activities. He added that security agencies would be expected to intensify efforts to identify and arrest people involved in violent crimes.
The security meeting will also examine the recent killings allegedly connected to rival cult groups. The government is expected to work with security agencies on ways to prevent further clashes and deal with those responsible for the attacks.
The development comes after two separate incidents involving suspected members of rival cult groups were reported in Osogbo between Friday and Sunday.
The attacks reportedly left two people dead while about five others sustained injuries. The incidents have raised fresh concerns over the safety of residents and the need for authorities to act quickly to prevent another round of violence.
Following the recent attacks, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, directed tactical teams to carry out raids on suspected criminal hideouts in Osogbo.
The police action is part of efforts to identify those behind the violence, disrupt criminal activities and prevent further attacks in the state.
The planned meeting between Governor Adeleke and the security chiefs is expected to produce additional measures aimed at improving public safety and restoring calm in communities affected by the recent violence.
