A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room after allegedly spending time with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.
The lecturer was reportedly staying at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, when the incident occurred on October 5, 2026.
Uwuigbe was said to have checked into the hotel with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob. The two reportedly spent some time together before the lecturer asked her to step out and get water.
Jacob was said to have returned to the room later and found Uwuigbe lying motionless on the bed.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police at about 8pm on the same day, leading to an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed that three people had been taken into custody over the incident. Those arrested were identified as the hotel owner, the hotel manager and Jacob, who was reportedly with the deceased shortly before his death.
The police said the investigation would determine what happened inside the hotel room and whether any person was responsible for the lecturer’s death.
Uwuigbe’s body has since been taken to the mortuary at Oriaifo Memorial Hospital, where it was deposited pending further investigation and other necessary procedures.
The university also confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff. However, the institution stated that the incident did not happen on university property and was unrelated to the activities of the school.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the woman involved was not a student of Ambrose Alli University.
Police authorities are expected to continue questioning the three suspects and examine other circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death as investigations progress.
