The Senate went into mourning on Wednesday after Senator Okey Ezea, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District, died in the United Kingdom while receiving medical care. Ezea, who was elected on the Labour Party platform, was the only LP lawmaker from Enugu State in the 10th National Assembly.

Ezea’s death makes him the second serving senator from the South-East to pass away in two years. Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of Anambra had died in London in July 2024 at age 52.

News of Ezea’s passing reached the National Assembly early on Wednesday, and lawmakers reacted with deep sorrow. Many described him as a calm, devoted, and prayerful politician whose presence in the Senate brought a sense of humility and purpose.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia North said he received the news with pain and expressed that Ezea was more than a fellow senator to him. He said they shared a close friendship built on trust, mutual respect, and years of interactions. Kalu also recalled their shared Catholic faith and moments spent worshipping together. He extended his condolences to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the people of Enugu State, Governor Peter Mbah, the Nsukka community, and the family of the late senator.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central also mourned Ezea, describing him as a gentle colleague who often prayed with her and encouraged her through personal challenges. She said Enugu North and Kogi Central mourn together as both districts honour his memory.
The Senate is expected to formally address his death during plenary, and lawmakers will likely observe a minute of silence, as is the tradition when a serving member dies. Ezea’s passing has left colleagues, supporters, and constituents grieving a man they described as devoted to duty and firm in his beliefs.
